The story is narrated by Journey, a struggling thirty-something chef with a drinking problem and a very famous mother navigating the isolation and angst of her generation while looking for a family of her own, a ten-year-old Tyson Ryder telling tales of love and horror from the last summer he and his family spent together in Miami, and letters from his younger sister, gifted and troubled Rainy, who writes from the grave about her teen years spent in Pennsylvania coal country where boys were plucked up daily to be sent to Vietnam and her days as a lauded playwright on Broadway in the early ‘80s at the dawn of the AIDS epidemic.
